O'Malley Road development is just around the corner! O'Malley road is important to everyone in the Hillside area. The earlier you get involved, the more likely you will have an impact on the final result.

The last we heard, the plan was roughly four lanes to Lake Otis, three lanes to Birch and two lanes the rest of the way. Plans for trails, lights, noise and other important matters were still vague.

A new state law ushered in by an outgoing senator dramatically increased the planning horizon required for road building. That sent the O'Malley planners back to their drawing boards. Mirriam Tanaka from DOT will be at this month's meeting to let us know what the current plan is.

We are confident that the plans are not so far along that your ideas will be considered.

The Abbott Loop/Bragaw/Martin Luther King Extension appears to be speeding along. Plans for this new thoroughfare are being developed now. We will get an update by Bob Kneifel from Dowl Engineers. There will also be a "Public Scoping" meeting at 7PM, September 15, at Kasuun Elementary School.

A Citizen's Advisory Committee is being formed. If you would like to be a representative for the CC, let us know at our meeting. NEW DAY CARE FOR KIDS ON HILLSIDE DRIVE? The Planning & Zoning Commission will hear on Monday Nov. 10, 2003 Case 2003-153 "A Conditional Use to allow a Child Care Facility" at Chapel of the Cross at 12230 Hillside Dr. The zoning is currently R-6 Suburban residential district.

John Linnell, a representative of the Church, will tell us about their plans and take advantage of the Community Council as a forum for discussing this with neighbors.

According to Mr. Linnell, "The Church of the Nazarene has been a part of the Hillside Community for over 15 years. and will be opening Hillside Haven, a before and after school child care center for school age children K-6.

Hillside Haven will be open from 7-9 AM and 3:30-6:30 PM. We will open with a student capacity of 30. Currently there is a bus stop for Bear Valley Elementary in front of our building. There is also a bus stop for O'Malley Elementary about a block and a half down the road."

The Anchorage Woodlot is open through the end of the month at C Street and O'Malley next to Valley Sawmill. The lot is open 10am-6pm 7 days a week.

Bring natural brush and woody material only from residential lots with houses. It is intended for homeowners who are clearing brush and trees from their home ignition zone. All woody material must be less than 6 feet long.

For homeowners living in neighborhoods exposed to potential wildland fires, AFD has a cost share tree removal program. The primary goal is to reduce the potential for your home to ignite during a wildfire. AFD will provide 70% reimbursement to homeowners for expenses incurred to remove spruce bark beetle killed trees and dense-growing live conifers. For more info, go to www.muni.org/fire1

The pros say a wildfire on the Hillside is not a matter of "if" but "when." Your house can be one of the survivors. These services make it easier to make your home "Firewise."

Multiple Family Housing on the Hillside? P&ZC will consider allowing multiple family housing for Seniors on lots zoned R-6 (most of our area). This is Case 2003-149 to be heard October 6.

We are gathering information on this and hope to know more about how this might breach the "low density" residential neighborhoods that define the Upper Hillside area.

If this worries you, come to this month's meeting!

A Guided Tour of the Hillside is scheduled for later this month. The Hillside Community Council presidents will give a "tag team" tour of the Hillside to new Municipal executives Mary Jane Michael and Mike Abbott. This is a great opportunity to highlight a few features that are important to us while we cruise the area.

If you want to make sure a point is covered at this tour, email john@weddleton.com.

APD is Looking for Trouble! The new Day Shift Commander plans to target at least one location in each council district for special attention. The locations are 1) areas of concern to the community, 2) areas of numerous police calls, 3) traffic problem locations and 4) problem structures and/or vehicles.

To recommend an area, come to this month's meeting or email Tom at newins@gci.

OUR Council Boundaries changed. The recently redrawn council boundaries increased the MHCC and HECC area into Far North Bicentennial Park as far as Campbell Airstrip Road. Also, the MHCC boundary now encompasses all of the area bounded by 104th Ave, Birch Road, Abbott Rd and Ruth Arcand Park. Part of this area was in the Abbott Loop CC. The boundary runs down the middle of any streets so if you are on the north side of 104th, you are in Mid Hillside CC.

The new maps are posted at the council's website.

We are looking forward to lots of new people at our meetings!

DON'T BE SHY! The boards of both Councils are thinly filled. We will represent the area better if we have more people from more of the area. October is our Annual Meeting and a good time for YOU to join the board!
